As Giant Tuna Season Begins…

As the summer comes to an end and we all hope for a great fall giant tuna season bite, there are several important factors commercial and recreational tuna fisherman should think of as the season kicks off.

With mother nature at the helm, proper safety equipment on vessels regardless of size is truly the most important factor.

Did you know that recreational fisherman, fishing outside 12 miles off shore with a boat over 36’ need to have: a life raft, EPIRB and survival suits for each person on board after October 1st?

Outside of an emergency situation – who needs a survival suit when you can fish in the cold PEI waters and swim with these beauties!! (see picture)

Tuna fishermen know that the pursuit of catching these fish is more than addicting. Why would anyone want to wake up at 3am, fish in the cold New England waters and wait hours for a rod to bend? Well it’s the thrill of a lifetime when it happens and you’ll forever be hooked, wanting more.

For many, this chase is part of making a living. Along with safety, captains should be aware of crew liability and always have adequate P & I protection for the crewman on board. Whether you’re a recreational or commercial fisherman, many carriers can add a part time endorsement for each paid crewman, as well as can add a catch of sale endorsement up to 90 days.

If you have any questions regarding proper safety for your vessel, as well as P & I/ Catch of Sale endorsements, please feel free to contact Blake Murphy.
