At the end of last month, the Boston Business Journal (BBJ) wrote an article on data breaches over the last year (2013) that occurred in Massachusetts. It is important to note that these were the ones that were reported. There are an unknown amount of breaches that have yet to be found and/or reported.
The article has a directory of those companies who were breached and also states that 1 in 6 Massachusetts residents were exposed to a breach in the last year. These numbers have been growing exponentially since the data started to be tracked in 2007.
If curious, you can scroll through the companies who had information that was compromised. All of the information from the BBJ was information reported to the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation.

This is another example of the constant threat of data security and privacy. As an individual you must have safeguards in place, but the greater responsibility is with businesses.
