2011 Newport Boat Show

Blake Murphy and I took a few days last week to attend the Newport Boat Show. While Blake was well versed in the many different styles and set-ups that the boats consist of I was in awe of the detail, definition and extravagance of many of the boats.

We toured the likes of the Wilbur Yachts 42 sportfish, CABO Yachts new enclosed Express and Hinckley’s T38R Convertible (no really, this boat has a drop top – Pictured).

The price range of the items for sale at the show started around $20 and ranged to $4,000,000. The $20 being the pair of sunglasses I bought to the 4 million being the 55 Hinckley I unfortunately didn’t come home with.

In the vendor area, parts from bow thrusters to components for the head were for sale. The parts were extremely specialized and unique to the different boats – this is where my insurance brain kicked in – thinking about how an inexperienced agent may not be able to identify the many components of the engine, electronics and overall mechanics of the vessel, as well as numerous items listed on the survey. Another aspect unique to a marine insurance specialist would be the understanding of fishing equipment that may only be on the boat during overnight trips to the canyons, as well as other personal effects.

The Marine team at Deland, Gibson is equipped to handle all situations that stem from a 13’ Boston Whaler to the 68’ Viking Sportfish or Mega-Yacht.
