One of the last things you want to think about when on vacation is about the local hospitals in case of an emergency. If you are in a third world country or area that may not have medical care on par of that in the United States; you may be in trouble if you are not able to make it back to the US for treatment. It may also be cripplingly expensive to get a medical evacuation flight. It may not even be possible.

With a lesser injury many foreign countries make you pay upfront for any procedures. This is often not considered and can be a huge roadblock to medical care. For example in the below article a golfer lost many of his fingers after being bitten by a crocodile – and he and his three friends had to split up 17.5K on their credit cards to get him treatment.
