Lightning Strike – Are You Prepared?

Admin Personal Insurance Leave a Comment

A lightning strike can happen in a half second and can heat the surrounding air to over 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Here are some steps you can take to protect you and your home.

  • Stay off the phone – Phone use is the leading cause of indoor lightning injuries.
  • Stay away from any sources of water – sinks, showers, bathtubs, pools – lightning can through plumbing.
  • Avoid using washers and dryers.
  • Stay away from doors and windows
  • Stay off computers and other electrical devices (anything that puts you in direct contact with electricity).
  • Unplug any appliances that are not in use. Use surge protectors but do not rely on them.
  • Do not go outside for 30 minutes after that last thunder is heard – lightning can strike from 10 miles away.

As we’ve seen in the last few weeks, spring time brings in powerful storm cells. We hope these tips can help prepare you for lightning strikes and keep your family safe.
