If the past few months have taught us anything, it’s that Massachusetts is not exempt from natural disasters. We have seen tornados, earthquakes, hurricanes, and even a Nor’ Easter in October! Snow storms and other dangerous weather patterns are up next. With the pending winter weather, it’s important to think what you may need to do without the modern amenities we take for granted.
What would you take with you that you could only carry? The Ready campaign, in coordination with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, suggests these items to include in an emergency supply kit:
• One gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
• At least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
• Battery-powered radio with extra batteries
• Flashlight and extra batteries
• First aid kit
• Whistle to signal for help
• Dust mask to help filter contaminated air
• Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
• Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
• Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
• Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger
You may want to consider including these additional items:
• Prescription medications and glasses
• Infant formula and diapers
• Pet food and extra water for your pet
• Cash or traveler’s checks and change
• Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records in a waterproof, portable container
• Emergency reference material such as a first aid book
• Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person.
• Complete change of clothing and extra coats or jackets.
• Fire Extinguisher
• Matches in a waterproof container
• Personal hygiene items
